Where is Son Doong located? The mystery of the largest cave on the planet
Hidden deep within the core zone of Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park, Bo Trach District, Quang Binh Province, Son Doong Cave is proudly the world’s largest natural cave. Discovered accidentally by a local man named Ho Khanh in 1991 and later explored by the British Cave Research Association (BCRA) in 2009, Son Doong shocked the global scientific community with its massive size and surreal beauty.
With a length of nearly 9km, a width of 150m, and heights reaching over 200m in some places, the volume of Son Doong is up to 38.5 million cubic meters. This size is so immense that people often say it could contain an entire New York City block with skyscrapers or allow Boeing airplanes to fly through comfortably.

The “surreal” ecosystem inside the earth
What makes the Son Doong cave exploration journey so special is not just its size, but a completely isolated world. Son Doong possesses a distinct ecosystem with lush primeval forests, babbling underground rivers, and even its own climate system that creates ethereal clouds right inside the cave.
Due to the collapse of some parts of the cave ceiling millions of years ago, sunlight penetrated inside, allowing vegetation to thrive. The two largest sinkholes, Doline 1 (Watch out for Dinosaurs) and Doline 2 (Garden of Edam), are where primeval forests grow strongest, creating a unique “forest in a cave” spectacle in the world.

The majestic beauty of giant stalactites and cave pearls
Through millions of years of formation, nature has endowed Son Doong with giant stalactites in unique shapes. The most special one is the “Great Wall of Vietnam” – a massive stalactite wall about 90m high blocking the passage, requiring explorers to use specialized equipment and endurance to overcome.
In addition, Son Doong also possesses an invaluable field of “cave pearls”. These pearls were formed by water drops falling from the cave ceiling over thousands of years, creating unique spherical stones with large sizes, an extremely rare geological phenomenon in other caves.

A world-class expedition experience
The Son Doong cave exploration journey is rated as one of the most classy and expensive adventure tours in the world. According to the latest updates from reputable newspapers in early 2026, Son Doong expedition tours exclusively operated by Oxalis Adventure are fully booked until 2027.
Every year, in order to strictly preserve the landscape and ecosystem, the Quang Binh authorities only issue permits for a maximum of 1,000 visitors to enter the cave. With a price tag of about 3,000 USD/person for a 4-day 3-night tour, visitors will be taken care of by a team of about 30 people including cave experts, guides, safety assistants, and dedicated local porters carrying luggage and food.
